Pierneef, Jacob Hendrik

Johannesburg

  • 1940
  • Pen and watercolour on paper
  • Signed and dated on bottom right corner
  • 73 x 93 cm
Better known for his austere South African landscapes, Pierneef also turned to the city. This preparatory sketch for one of the two murals painted for the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court presents a consciously modernist vision of Johannesburg, drawing on international architectural trends to align its identity with that of European capitals.
