Silent Symphony centres Sibande’s alter ego, Sophie, a domestic worker who escapes constraint through imagination. Her extravagant uniform transforms labour into spectacle, dignity and command. Drawing on histories of black South African women’s domestic work, Sibande recasts servitude as self-fashioning, where fantasy becomes a powerful act of resistance.
